Cold Therapy: Why Ice Your Horse’s Legs

The repeated application of ice to treat musculoskeletal injuries in horses is a time-honored and tested therapy that should be considered first when treating injuries showing pain, swelling and heat.

It is very beneficial to use cold therapy on equine athletes with joint and lower limb problems after every training and performance activity for their entire career. After every athletic session there is a new inflammation to the injured area that will benefit from cold treatment. Professional’s Choice’s specially designed compressive Ice Boots are preferable as they reduce potential damage to the lower leg tissues caused by long periods of standing in ice water.

The design of our Ice Boots is what makes them special. The outer material is limestone-based neoprene, an insulator that helps hold and maintain the cold longer and won’t absorb moisture. On the inside, the multiple elastic pockets allow localized, customized therapy for each horse because they accommodate various amounts of ice in each pocket. These pockets eliminate the trauma caused by putting ice directly on the horse’s skin because the cold slowly permeates the elastic, allowing the horse to gradually feel the cold. Like all Professional’s Choice products, the Ice Boots were created with the horse’s comfort in mind.
